It doesn’t matter if hunger strikes at 7 AM or 10:30 PM. But first, let’s define what hunger actually is and why it’s important to listen to your body’s signals.

Hunger is your body’s natural response when it needs nutrients and energy.

Why should I eat when I’m hungry?

Athletes have higher energy needs than sedentary individuals, so it’s completely normal to feel hungry more often. That’s just your body’s way of meeting its energy demands. Think about it: when your bladder is full, you feel the urge to pee. What do you do in that situation? Now think about what you’ll do next time you feel intense hunger.

Different types of hunger:

Physiological hunger – builds up gradually, sticks around and gets stronger over time. Most commonly felt as an empty or growling stomach, but can also bring fatigue, headaches or irritability. This type of hunger isn’t picky – you’ll eat whatever’s available and it goes away once you’ve eaten.

Emotional hunger – hits suddenly, even if you’ve recently eaten. It’s very specific (usually cravings for sweets) and you can’t pinpoint it in your stomach. It’s often a way of coping with emotions like stress, sadness, frustration, joy or boredom.

Taste hunger – triggered by seeing or smelling something delicious. You might feel this even if you’re not physically hungry. For example, you’ve just finished a meal at a restaurant, but the dessert menu tempts you anyway.

Practical hunger – super important for athletes. It’s not driven by physical hunger, but by knowing you won’t have a chance to eat later (due to school, work, travel, etc.) and you’ll need energy. For example, you eat during your last school break even if you’re not hungry, because you have practice right after.

Hunger and hormonal response to exercise:

Ghrelin is the hormone that signals hunger and tells your body it needs food. On the other hand, hormones like Peptide YY, GLP-1 and pancreatic polypeptide (PP) signal satiety and tell your body to stop eating.

Aerobic (endurance) exercise decreases ghrelin levels and increases satiety hormone levels. What does that mean? During and after moderate-intensity aerobic training, you may not feel hunger as intensely. Similar effects happen after strength training, but to a lesser degree.

Sometimes, athletes may feel less hungry than they should and end up eating fewer calories than they need.

Do I have to eat even if I'm not hungry?

Let’s go back to our original question. Hunger and fullness cues are super important, but sometimes your brain tricks you into thinking you’re not hungry—even when your body really needs fuel to recover from a long or intense workout. This is one of those moments where sports nutrition becomes essential.

Be prepared to eat sometimes even if you’re not hungry. The easiest way to practice "practical hunger" is to schedule snacks before and after training. Start with easy-to-digest foods or drinks and build from there.

Le spun mereu sportivilor cu care lucrez că dacă le este foame, trebuie să mănânce.
